This contract role for a Senior Counsel, Product Privacy, focuses on providing legal guidance on privacy matters specifically related to the company's payments and insurance products. The position involves acting as the primary legal advisor for global payment processing, payouts, fraud prevention systems, and insurance programs such as AirCover. The successful candidate will navigate the intersection of international privacy laws, financial data regulations, and insurance compliance requirements. Daily responsibilities include collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Payments, Insurance, and Privacy Management, to embed privacy legal requirements into the product lifecycle and negotiating commercial contracts with external service providers. This role is suited for a legal professional with over eight years of experience in privacy law, specifically within financial data, payments, or insurance-adjacent regulatory environments. It requires an individual capable of balancing complex legal risks with business strategy in a fast-paced, global setting while maintaining a consistent approach to data governance and compliance across multiple international jurisdictions.
Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way. Airbnb’s Legal Department is a global team that will require working with diverse international colleagues around the world. The successful candidate will be someone who is adaptable, collaborative and embodies Airbnb’s Core Values. Candidates will be required to approach complex legal issues with a balance for local and global perspectives, while being adaptable to cultural differences and nuances. A genuine and demonstrated interest in Airbnb and a commitment to ethics, integrity and fostering a workplace that emphasizes diversity and belonging is a must. The Community You Will Join: Airbnb is seeking a business-oriented Senior Counsel with deep experience in global privacy laws and regulatory compliance to join our growing legal team. The Difference You Will Make: You will play a critical role within our global privacy and cybersecurity legal team, and work across multiple global teams and regions providing support and advice to Airbnb’s business. You must have excellent judgment in balancing legal risks with business strategy and a proven ability to learn new areas of law and function independently in a demanding fast-paced environment. We’re looking for a highly adaptable and collaborative person who can handle ambiguity and rapidly shifting priorities with flexibility, patience, and poise. A Typical Day: Serves as the primary privacy legal advisor for Payments and Insurance processes and products globally, shaping how privacy legal requirements are embedded into these products and processes, including advising on the privacy implications of payment processing, payouts, financial product features, and fraud prevention systems across all markets, as well as advising on all privacy legal aspects related to Airbnb's Insurance products, including AirCover, Host Protection Insurance, and related coverage programs. Advises on the intersection of privacy law and payments and insurance obligations globally, including PCI-DSS adjacencies, state and national financial privacy laws in the US, and international payment data requirements, as well as on the regulatory intersection of insurance laws and privacy laws across key markets, where insurance regulation introduces specific obligations, working in close coordination with Payments Legal, Payments Compliance, Insurance Legal, and regional Counsels where required. Advises Commercial Legal in negotiating commercial contracts with payment processors and insurance providers. Acts as a key cross-functional influencer with Payments and Insurance Legal and Privacy Management teams to identify and articulate privacy legal risks, requirements, and tradeoffs early in the product lifecycle. Partners closely with the Lead Counsel, Product Privacy, Privacy Managers, Payments and Insurance Legal, compliance teams and regional product privacy counsels to align privacy guidance across geographies, ensuring consistent standards and localized compliance. Monitors and advises on privacy legal and regulatory requirements related to data privacy requirements and supports associated compliance strategies for payments and insurance products and processing, including with respect to U.S. and other global privacy laws. Provides advice and counsel to the Privacy Operations team on the implementation of global privacy compliance requirements related to data governance and data lifecycle management projects. Your Expertise: 8+ years of privacy law experience with depth in financial data privacy, payments, or insurance-adjacent regulatory contexts. Demonstrated experience advising on global payments or financial services data practices in a B2C or platform context. Experience working across legal, compliance, and commercial functions in a matrixed organization. Technical / Domain Knowledge: Strong understanding of the intersection of privacy law and financial data regulation, including CCPA, GLBA, PCI-DSS adjacencies, and equivalent international frameworks. Familiarity with insurance data regulatory requirements and how they intersect with global privacy law across key markets. Ability to advise on data minimization, legal basis, and transparency requirements for complex financial and insurance product features. Leadership & Communication: Ability to influence across product, payments, legal, and compliance stakeholders without formal authority.
