Industrial Software Engineer - Railway Applications (m/w/d) 80-100%

Traila · Regensdorf

Traila is a technology company focused on modernising rail transport with sustainable, efficient solutions. The Industrial Software Engineer – Railway Applications will spend most of the time designing, coding and maintaining application software for railway and industrial products, primarily using C++, C# and Python. The role requires translating system and operational requirements into functional software, integrating code with sensors, actuators, controllers and data‑acquisition hardware, and implementing communication stacks such as CAN, CANopen, EtherCAT and TCP/IP. Daily tasks include building state‑machine logic, creating unit and integration tests, supporting commissioning and field trials on prototypes and rail vehicles, and performing diagnostics and root‑cause analysis. The engineer also owns software architecture, version‑control discipline, code reviews and cybersecurity measures, and may mentor junior team members while developing tools for configuration and data analysis. The position suits candidates with a degree in computer science, electrical or mechatronics engineering or equivalent experience, who have professional industrial or automotive software development background, proven railway software releases, and familiarity with EN 50128/EN 50716 lifecycle standards.

About Traila At Traila, we are dedicated to shaping the future of rail transport through cutting-edge technology. Since our founding in 2017, we have been driven by a passion for sustainability and excellence. We believe that rail transport is a cornerstone of a greener future, and our mission is to make it quieter, more efficient, and more reliable. Our talented team is at the heart of this mission, and we are looking for an Industrial Software Engineer - Railway Applications to join us in developing robust software solutions that operate reliably in real-world railway environments. What you will do - Industrial Software Development: Design, implement and maintain robust application software for industrial and railway products using C++, C#, Python or comparable technologies. - Application & System Integration: Translate system and operational requirements into practical software functionality and integrate software with real hardware and physical systems. - Hardware & Device Interfaces: Integrate sensors, actuators, controllers, DAQ systems and other industrial devices. - Communication Protocols: Implement and troubleshoot interfaces such as CAN/CANopen, EtherCAT, TCP/IP and other industrial or vehicle communication protocols. - Controls & Application Logic: Implement state machines, operational logic, control functionality and system behaviour required by the application. - Commissioning & Field Support: Support installation, commissioning and field testing on prototypes, test systems and rail vehicles, including travel to customer and test sites when required. - Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Analyse logs, interfaces and system behaviour to identify root causes and solve software and integration issues efficiently. - Testing & Validation: Develop unit, integration and system-level tests and contribute to HIL/SIL or other validation activities where relevant. - Software Architecture, Quality & Controlled Releases: Own software architecture and release discipline, including configuration and version control, code reviews, test evidence and controlled software releases. - Product Cybersecurity: Own threat assessment, secure access and software updates, vulnerability handling and lifecycle security maintenance; coordinate specialist security reviews and work with Systems/RAMS on vehicle interfaces and safety consequences. - Technical Guidance & Mentoring: Review implementations, share practical software-engineering practices and mentor colleagues to strengthen consistency, maintainability and technical ownership across the team. - Tools & Data: Develop tools for configuration, testing, diagnostics, data acquisition and analysis that support engineering and field activities. - Documentation & Continuous Improvement: Maintain clear software and interface documentation and improve existing code as Traila products mature from development into deployed systems. What you bring - Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics or a related discipline, or equivalent practical technical experience. - Hands-on professional software-development experience in an industrial, automation, automotive, machinery or comparable technical environment. - Proven professional railway software experience, including products released and maintained in service. - Strong practical programming skills in C++, C#, Python or a comparable industrial software stack; you do not need to be an expert in every language listed. - Experience developing software that interacts with real hardware, devices or physical systems. - Experience taking software beyond prototypes into tested, maintainable and deployable industrial use. - Practical railway software lifecycle experience aligned with EN 50716:2023, including requirements traceability, configuration management and verification/validation appropriate to the required software integrity level; relevant EN 50128 / EN 50657 predecessor experience is also valuable. - Practical embedded or industrial cybersecurity experience, including secure credentials and access, signed software updates and rollback, and handling vulnerabilities in released products. - Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across software, communication and hardware interfaces. - Experience with Git and structured software-development workflows. - A practical ownership mindset: comfortable working directly with prototypes, test equipment and deployed systems and driving technical problems through to resolution. - Ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines and communicate technical issues clearly. - Fluent English; German is a strong advantage. Nice to have - Experience with industrial Linux, embedded Linux, automation or control systems. - MATLAB/Simulink, HIL/SIL testing, data acquisition or condition-monitoring experience. - Working knowledge of railway cybersecurity under CLC/TS 50701:2023 and of EN IEC 62443-4-1 (secure development) and EN IEC 62443-4-2
