contractLegal Product Builder
Carta · Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Carta operates as a connected platform and AI‑native ecosystem for private capital, providing a unified system of record for equity management, fund administration, and legal infrastructure used by founders, investors, and legal teams. As a Legal Product Builder, you will work within Carta Law to develop AI‑driven legal products alongside engineers and product managers. Day‑to‑day tasks include translating legal judgement into rules and workflows for AI agents, creating evaluation criteria and test cases, prototyping new capabilities with AI tools, and evaluating agent performance against real‑world scenarios to identify gaps and improve reasoning. You will also anticipate ambiguity and edge cases, deciding how the product should handle situations that require human judgement. The role suits a lawyer with four or more years of substantive experience—whether from Big Law, in‑house at an asset manager or private‑equity firm, or a comparable legal practice—who demonstrates product thinking, can sparr with engineers on AI product design, communicates clearly in writing, and works autonomously. Prior exposure to commercial contract negotiation, legal tech, or contract automation is a plus.
The Company You’ll Join Carta is the connected platform and AI-native ecosystem for private capital. Built to replace fragmented tools with a single system of record, Carta brings together the software, services, and legal infrastructure that founders use to manage equity, fund managers use to run administration and reporting, and legal teams use to close transactions. Trusted by 55,000 companies and 1.8M+ equity holders in 160+ countries, and 10,000 funds and SPVs representing $250B+ in assets under management, Carta is transforming how private capital operates. Recognized by Fortune, Forbes, Fast Company, Inc. and Great Places to Work. For more information about our offices and culture, check out our Carta careers page . The Problems You'll Solve As a Legal Product Builder, you will sit at the cutting edge of building technology around the practice of law. You will: Build AI-powered legal products alongside engineers and product managers: Bring deep legal expertise into the product development process, helping turn complex legal work into scalable, agent driven experiences Translate legal judgement into systems: Break down legal processes like contract review and compliance into the decisions, rules, workflows, exceptions, and escalation points an AI agent needs to navigate Teach our agents what "good" looks like: develop examples, evaluation criteria, test cases and feedback loops that help our legal agents produce accurate, useful, and trustworthy work. Evaluate and improve agent performance. Test against real world scenarios, identify where the reasoning or outputs fall short, diagnose failure modes, and partner with engineers to improve them. Anticipate ambiguity, edge cases, conflicting information and situations requiring human judgement and determine how our products should handle them Prototype new legal capabilities: use AI tools directly to experiment with prompts, workflows, and agent behaviour, moving from an idea to a working prototype before or alongside engineering to shape what we build next The Team You'll Work With You'll join Carta Law, an AI-native legal services firm that sits at the intersection of legal expertise and cutting-edge technology. The team's philosophy is full ownership — Carta Law doesn't sell tools, it delivers legal and compliance services end to end, from intake to negotiation to execution and reporting. You'll work alongside top AI engineers and legal professionals who are actively reimagining how legal work gets done, from agents that negotiate agreements to document intelligence and extraction tools to a dedicated platform combining agents, workflows, and human lawyers. About You Legal Background: You're a lawyer with 4+ years of substantive training and experience, whether that's Big Law, in-house at an asset manager or PE firm, or comparable legal practice or within a legal-adjacent role. Product Thinking: You have a demonstrated track record of identifying where legal workflows break down and proposing (or actually building) something better. Technical Fluency: You don't need to write code, but you're comfortable sparring with engineers on how AI products are built and can translate legal judgment into something a technical team can act on. Communication & Autonomy: You're a strong written communicator with sharp judgment, and you operate with a high degree of independence. Nice to have: Direct commercial contract negotiation experience (NDAs, subscription agreements, transaction docs); prior time at a legal tech company or in a hybrid legal/product role; familiarity with contract automation, document intelligence, or negotiation tooling; founder experience or having built something from scratch.
